Century Cruises embarks on a bright future along one of Europe’s grandest waterways.

When was the last time you felt butterflies on a river cruise? Was it gazing up at a medieval castle steeped in legends that are woven into every stone? Or was it enjoying a sumptuous meal as you drifted between legendary capital cities and past empires? Maybe it was during a rejuvenating massage that felt like it gave you years back?

While relaxing on a cruise ship in pure indulgence, have you ever wondered where everything around you came from? Did you ever question if the materials were locally sourced or shipped from far-flung places?

These big, dreamy questions have a simple answer. Eco-conscious cruising has reached the banks of Europe’s rivers thanks to Century Cruises. This fall, the 30-year-young cruise company from China is launching its first eco-friendly vessel on one of Europe’s grandest waterways: the majestic Danube River.

Modern tech meets old-world elegance

Over the past three decades, Century Cruises has built ships with love, precision and the latest technology. The company has also made sustainability a top priority, from the Yangtze River in China to the Danube in Europe.

In its efforts, the company has built four eco-luxury vessels on the Yangtze River in the last four years alone to protect endangered species like the Chinese alligator. These unique reptiles are the only known living alligator species native to China, and they can be seen exclusively in the Yangtze River region.

All of its vessels on the Yangtze River use the latest technology, such as low-emission systems and high-efficiency rudder propellers, to be more energy efficient. To reduce river pollution even further, Century Cruises has integrated electric propulsion, which is one of the most effective and well-tested alternative power solutions available today. Thousands of miles away from the Yangtze River in the heart of Europe, Century Cruises is now taking a different approach to sustainability on the mighty Danube. Its new vessel, Century Star, balances modern, eco-conscious innovation with old-world charm and elegance.

A Century Star is Born

Born from a truly global harmony, the new ship has been shaped by the meeting of Chinese vision and Western craftsmanship. Joining the brand’s environmentally conscious fleet, Century Star is fully compliant with EU sustainability standards for achieving net-zero carbon performance and features hybrid propulsion and a hull crafted from recycled steel, among its green elements.

Even with its modern hull designed by Concordia Damen Shipbuilding, the ship’s timeless style looks like it has always belonged on the Danube’s richly historic shores.

Measuring over 440 feet, the ship has 78 luxury cabins that can host up to 174 guests, for an intimate and refined cruising experience. Around the ship, the lush interiors overseen by the renowned MDesigns group draw inspiration from the diverse cultures and landscapes of the Danube.

Paying homage to the Black Forest, where the legendary river begins, the main restaurant showcases an interior concept which was honored at the Cruise Ship Interiors Awards 2025 as a finalist for Concept of the Year. Similarly, the bar and lounge channel Baroque architecture and the musical legacy of Strauss to capture the cozy elegance of traditional Viennese coffee houses.

Reflecting the connection to the regions it visits, the lobby nods to Bulgaria’s Rose Valley, while standard cabins exude the welcoming charm of a Serbian home accented with touches of local handicraft.

Walking through Century Star feels like traveling through the heart of every country along the Danube. The backdrop of the river becomes a cultural tapestry seamlessly woven into the ship itself. But what really shines through is that eco-friendly features and luxury can coexist on the Danube right now. Century Cruises has proved it with Century Star.

For inspired travelers, the new Empress of Europe will embark on her maiden Danube voyage on September 18, 2026. Now, the only question that remains is:

Will you be there?
